Pennsylvania is located in USA with a population of about 12,448,279. The outbreaks of swine flu has affected this place also as it is one of the states of USA. According to a report about 2929 cases of swine flu has been found in Pennsylvania out of which 14 deaths have been declared. As expected the figures are not something very threatening, however since the symptoms of swine flu are more sever in many individuals leading to loss of workdays, it is necessary to protect the society against swine flu or other viral threats that have potential to trigger a pandemic.

Response of Government to Pennsylvania swine flu cases

After first swine flu case was spotted in Mexico, the Pennsylvanian health officials became sensitive to any incidence that might point to presence of swine flu in the state. The health department in Pennsylvania started inspecting all cases of flu all over the state to ascertain the number of Pennsylvania swine flu cases (if any) and accordingly prepared to provide treatment to those affected by swine flu. In the course The Pennsylvania health department found a two year child coping with the sickness same as swine flu. This case was reported before the epidemic of swine flu in USA. The serum sample from the child was sent to Centers for disease control and prevention to know the exact illness of child and it was found to be influenza A infection. Soon the child was given treatment and he recovered from the illness.

After the first case of swine flu was detected the Pennsylvania Department of Health became even more alert so that the number of Pennsylvania swine flu cases remains under control. Till now maximum number of cases reported in Pennsylvania came from Philadelphia (520). Philadelphia also reported highest number of deaths (8) due to swine flu. Philadelphia was followed by Allegheny where 329 cases were reported with only one death. Other cities that reported more than 100 cases include Berks, Bucks, Delaware, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery and Northampton.

The mortality rate is slightly higher than global average but again global average has it’s own discrepancies like underreporting and over reporting. The regions of Pennsylvania that did fairly well against swine flu include Adams, Armstrong, Blair, Bradford, Cameron, Clinton, Elk, Fayette, Susquehanna, Washington and Wyoming where the number of cases reported were insignificant and spread was minimal. This may also be due to a rarer population density compared to bigger cities. Whatever be the case one must remember that the first person to take care of your health is you yourself and precaution is far better that treatment. Hence take some time to review and ascertain weather you are prepared to handle the next viral pandemic or not?
